There’s 24 hours in a day and most of that is spent sleeping, at work, or on a mindless activity. Think about it: are you really using your time wisely? I once I had to keep track of everything I spent time on for an acting business class and I quickly learned how much I was wasting my time. And just like that, all my excuses of “I don’t have time” rapidly evaporated. Between Internet surfing, getting sucked into social media, and watching TV, you too are probably not managing your time efficiently. That’s ok! I think it’s perfectly normal to experience periods of time when we’re just, well, ya know…not doing much of anything. However, this should not be the way we function 24/7. I have goals, I’m sure you have goals, and in order to stay on track we have to manage our time. Here are a few personal tips for how to use your time wisely and efficiently. 1. GET UP EARLIER: There’s a reason why the phrase early bird catches the worm exists. Because it’s true! Yes I know, we like to sleep in every now and then but the later you get up the less time you have to do what you need to do. At least that’s the way I see it. If you have a to-do list a mile long or a deadline approaching, it’s best to get an early start to your day and get as much done as possible. 2. MAKE A LIST/WRITE IT DOWN: I tend to remember what I write down really well so this works for me. Try to keep your daily tasks realistic, this is the best way not to get discouraged and feel stressed. Whether it’s in a special notebook or on your phone, write/type it down! Inspiration can hit at any moment and you don’t want to forget about that amazing idea. Utilizing Google calendar is a great option as well. 3. LEARN TO PRIORITIZE: This can be a hard one sometimes but that’s what making sacrifices are all about. Remember my mantra: learn to say ‘no’ to others so you can say ‘yes’ to yourself. That may mean using your weekends to get work done or turning down invitations to outings. Most of the time we know what we need to do but choose not to do it. There are times when I’d love to go out with my girls on a weekend, go dancing, have dinner etc. But I also know that I have a budget to stick with, lines to memorize, and writing to do, so that means, no hanguear pa mi (no hanging out for me). You do what you have to do in order to get to where you want to be. 4. MINIMIZE TV/INTERNET TIME: Yup, I said it! Go on a social media or TV fast if you need to. We all should do this from time to time. Trust me, you won’t miss much. If you’re spending more than 6 hours a week playing couch potato, try cutting it down to 3. About to check Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, SnapChat, Vine etc? Be mindful of the time and don’t stay on for longer than 3o minutes. I’m being generous with the 30 minutes too LOL! But you get my point. Don’t get me wrong, I treat myself when I feel I need it, but I don’t abuse it. When I know I have a busy week coming up my planner comes in handy. I give myself deadlines and if I need a break from what I’m working on, I indulge for about 45 minutes to an hour and get right back to it.
We all have the same hours in a day Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Mother Teresa; don’t waste it, use your time wisely.
